Long time readers of this blog you poor guys, thanks for sticking with me! For the last seven years, these guys have been pumping out great advice, and even more important: actionable advice, for managers who want to become more effective. The need for this podcast, and their consulting services is apparent. Effective managers improve the effectiveness of their teams, and so the organization benefits.

And Manager Tools helps in becoming more effective in the modern organization enterprise structure. We know effective agile teams are self-organized. There is no manager role in a scrum team. We also know that this kind of team usually clashes with the rest of the organization. If most managers are not effective, and are really an obstacle, why do we need them?

Here are responsibilities of managers. Responsibilities created by company structure, they can be changed in the structure changes. Hiring and firing seems like a managerial job. Hiring someone means money transfers. Firing him means legal stuff. The system requires authority of approval. Promotion is an organizational idiom, in flat organizations, promotions make no sense but it comes with money perks, so again we need approval authority.

Do teams need managers to improve? Jurgen Appelo thinks not , and I agree. Coaching can be effective, having the expertise. But she can make sure coaching occurs. This requires authority and follow-up. As we look to improve the performance of the team, the manager can create the conditions where effectiveness improves.

The less expert she is, the team members rely on themselves to improve. Protecting the team may sound patronizing, and as all agile practitioners know, is required. Protection from what? Other parts of the organization. Actually, protection is part of inter-organizational communication. It is more simple although maybe not as effective to communicate through small number of managers, rather than to everyone directly.

Anyone can do that — but it requires some recognition in the organization, with organizational know-how. Finally, decision making and solving conflicts within the team stems directly from authority. Anyone can and does make decision everyday.

We talk about managers, and how organizations are easy to manage, because it simplifies management. The teams can do the rest, and their effectiveness will probably improve. It works. 10 Things You Need To Do When You Become a Manager

Tech giant Google is a leader in the space of redefining the role of managers. They deliberately decrease the level of power and authority managers have over employees. Get started. So Google embarked on a new project to understand what that would look like.

After all, your purpose as a manager — your mission — is to make it easier for your direct reports to get their work done. You clear obstacles out of their way. You fight political battles so they can focus on their work.

We covered off a range of subjects but the conversation kept coming back to that opening quote and the accompanying podcast. All about the importance of autonomy and devolved decision making. Outside of work, people make all sorts of huge decisions about their lives. They take out mortgages, they make babies, they support ageing relatives and cope with bereavement. With their emails and meetings, together with outdated reporting and approval systems, managers are part of a wider hierarchical culture that is at odds with the digital age.

The Five Minds of a Manager

Skip to main content. Published: 07 Nov Entrusted with a leadership role, a manager is responsible for overseeing a department or group of employees within a specific organisation or company. Managers are utilised in every sector, and the business model relies on their leadership and ability to operationalise the management structure. Across every sector, managers contribute to businesses in significant ways, which are reflected in company profits, organisation, and overall workplace morale. While management structures vary depending on the size and ethos of a company, the two most popular structures include the traditional hierarchy structure and a flatter structure. For flatter structures, there are fewer layers within an organisation, and each level of the business is composed of many employees that communicate and collaborate.

Why Do We Need Managers?

Do you or do you want to manage employees? Have you ever wondered how to get better performance out of those you manage? Are you unsure if you are communicating effectively with your employees? Leadership and management responsibilities have changed dramatically, particularly in the last decade.

Success in business happens because of successful employees. That being said, strong managers are one of the most critical components of Employee Success — after all, employees leave managers, not companies.

Does your management job seem impossible? Your many roles are so often contradictory. Collaborate, and compete.

What Are the Main Responsibilities of Managers

These include large overhead costs, poor decision making, sluggishness due to bureaucracy, and employee disengagement and lack of empowerment. Managers have long been considered to be the bedrock of organizations, so even thinking about getting rid of them is considered by many to be taboo. But, it's time for us to challenge convention and think differently about the world of work.

When first starting your business you do it all—you oversee every aspect of your company. But as things grow, you eventually have to admit that trying to do everything yourself is no longer effective. If I see a trend in my work schedule where I started to end my day at , then , then , then , etc. The big sign for us was when we had a hard time continuing to focus on our business and strategic development. We hired more people to help and this freed us to focus on those strategic relationships.

I think that all of these ideas are wrong. Second Chance has certainly been very successful with their flat, non-hierarchical structure. If the structure of the management committee was a problem, they would have failed by now. So, maybe this structure only works for not-for-profits and software firms with open source platforms? Well, Valve is a gaming company that makes Half Life, Portal and many other popular games.

Do We Need Managers or Management?

Managers shape the culture of their teams and workplaces in countless ways. They have to play both an administrative and leadership role. And they require a diverse set of skills to be successful. But what exactly does a manager do?

What Great Managers Do

Leadership articles often generate a lot of comments discussing differences between leading and managing. People provide definitions and quotes to reinforce their points of view. This week, John M McKee may be adding to the heat.

What sets the great boss apart from the average boss? The literature is rife with provocative writing about the qualities of managers and leaders and whether the two differ, but little has been said about what happens in the thousands of daily interactions and decisions that allows managers to get the best out of their people and win their devotion. What do great managers actually do? Average managers play checkers, while great managers play chess. The difference?
